Day of the Dead (1985)
The hit Zombie film, Day of the Dead, is one of the classic Zombie films directed by “Godfather of the Dead” George Romero. In the film, the world, following the events of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, has been completely overrun by Zombies with only pockets of humanity left alive, effortlessly trying to maintain the hope of a return to civilisation yet struggling with the realisation that this day may never come. Making matters worse, there are two groups of thought about how continued existence of the human race can be achieved. The military, in their gung-ho ways, want to kill every single one of the infernal abominations. The scientists on the other hand, want to find a way to live along side the dead arguing, primarily, that is simply infeasible to eradicate an enemy that replaces its numbers with anyone it kills. The two groups are at a stalemate and the civilians caught up in the middle just want to get on with what little time they have left, doing what they must to survive without complicating things with lofty goals or delusions of returning to what life once was.
Bub is the name given to one of the Zombies captured by the military for the scientists to experiment on; to see if somehow, they can find a way for humans to coexist with Zombies. Remarkably, after what one assumes is weeks in captivity and having been given a steady supply of “food” (in the form of dead humans), Bub actually shows some signs of memory. He recognizes objects that he would have most likely used when he was alive including a shaving razor, a book and a Walkman (a portable music player for all you young people). When given an old rotatory telephone, Bub even speaks the phrase “Hello Aunt Alica” – not well, it must be said, but the words can definitely be heard.
